The danger of a single story: video #3

Chimamanda Adichie was an African woman who took part in conventions called Ted. She used her personal experiences in two ways: to show how the media could take a certain group or a community and turn them into whatever they’d like, changing the perceptions of others and forcing them to view the group in the same way the media portrays them. Soon the media forces the world to believe that there is only one thing that defines the community. Chimamanda explains that instead of looking at how so many people and communities are different than us, we should step back and focus on how we actually are all pretty similar. Most stories or assumptions you’ve heard about a certain community is exactly that, an assumption you know nothing more that you would know if you never even met them. You’re judgment is just clouded by lies and judgmental opinions. This scenario revolves all around the topic of gossiping, and listening to only one perspective instead of the entire truth. Dr. Charles Quist-Adade gave a similar scenario when he went and visited Windsor, Ontario. This is where Dr. Charles was introduced to two Tiberian men. Dr. Charles took his own judgment and assumed that since the first Tiberian man he met so was considerate and sincere, that both of the men would be the same. When in fact the Tiberian man could not have been any more deceiving than the other. Instead of staying and continuing raising the money for the magazine, the Tiberian man took off, taking with him four thousand dollars. This happens all over the world, just because we have one judgment of a race or community does not mean we should presume that they are all the similar.

Chapter 1: Religion and Homosexuality: Affective Reading

In this chapter they discuss homosexual struggles, to create community wide legitimacy; while still being held back by different religions and all in all the state. The biggest issue brought up was how a huge population of Americans (75%) that are Christians believes that same sex marriage is wrong. the chapter explains that due to the huge amount of the country America believe this certain way it therefore makes it difficult for those who are homosexuals to find a place where they fit in with society. The chapter also brings to are attention how religion controls a large portion of the country. Those who were influenced by their religion’s morals and beliefs put the laws relating to anti-gay marriage, into place. I feel this chapter did a great job at laying out the issues and examples. It thoroughly showed how society’s norms and beliefs have a strong influence in its individuals within it. The fact that America has a huge anti-gay population puts a lot of pressure and restrictions on those who are in the gay community. I think that chapter did a good job at emphasizing how the Christian community is affecting the gay community tremendously however the chapter could have put in a little extra attention in focusing on the anti-gay community and how much they are affecting. This chapter outlined some real issues within the anti-gay community however Christians are not the only religion who do not agree with homosexuality and this chapter should have been a little easier on the Christians and brought other religions to our attention and maybe focused on religions in general instead of fully concentration on Christians alone.  I believe that even though there are plenty of barriers and issues within our societies, they can be changed, and improved, if what they believe in is right then there seems to be no issues in fixing something and improving it for the greater good of our society; I am sure there are some Christians out there who do not believe that it is horrific in allowing non same sex marriages. I believe that soon enough this issues will no longer be one considering equality is slowly becoming recognized and homosexuality plays a huge part in that. I know that society places major pressure on individuals who have different beliefs and religions from our social norms, and this can lead to them feeling isolated and alone. However in previous history oppressed and sheltered groups have risen against all odds and brought forth tremendous power, gaining equality and right.

Bikini and G-String are OK, but wearing Hijab or Veil isn’t?

This video talked about our in our certain culture’s we view people differently depending on what their entire and their culture. Society has shown that they are okay with women barley wearing anything like, bikinis. Wearing bikinis has become a norm and is a part of our everyday life; with no judgment. However if we see a Hijab or Veil, we immediately begin to judge. In the video the speaker argues that it shouldn’t matter what anyone wears in their culture they shouldn’t have to explain themselves. I fell that some important points were brought up on how we stereotype Muslims on how their dressed and how we immediately think that it isn’t socially acceptable. I personally feel we have no right whatsoever to judge someone on what they where especially when cultures are involved. I think that we should have already outgrown all our judgments as a society and have come to acceptance to not worry about others and their attire. It really isn’t anyone’s one’s business in less its harming you or putting you in danger.  Discrimination in general should be done with; we have shown as a society that has grown but apparently we haven’t grown up as people. We should be more opened minded and less stereotypical.  I believe that society has grown tremendously and that hopefully one day soon we can move pass discriminations altogether. It really bothers me that we judge one other when really we could not be more similar. Hopefully sometime soon we can look past individual’s differences and see them as an individual and as equals. I know that society needs to change its ways immediately, although it may seem that we have moved past discrimination and grown apart from it all we’ve done is sheltered it and kept it in control, we haven’t changed anything as far as I am concerned. Hopefully generations to come can, make a difference and really see how wrong discrimination of all kinds is.

Shift Happens: Karl Fisch Affective Reading

In this video they explained how we as a human race are expanding exponentially. Through two ways: size and technological advancement. The video described how in everyday, week, month and year we are consistently growing as a human race. The message portrayed in this video is that shift happens, and is continually happening.  The premise of this video is that due to the shift happening we must act and make a move on it. I feel that the video really surprised me by how much it caught my attention and by how much I felt I related to our human race as funny as that sounds. The video really opened my eyes and mind to help me realize that our society is moving, and growing extremely fast and as a society our race is advancing. It’s crazy at how advanced our technology has gotten throughout the years and how much it still is continually growing. I cannot even begin to imagine what our world and society will look like 10 years down the line. I think that the combination of music and text really made an impact and were great to learn from. I feel it really got the point across. I feel the video itself informed me on how fast the world is really moving with or without me. It makes me feel like such a small part of our world to realize how much is actually going on out there without me even noticing. I know that our race and society has expanded and evolved so much already that its hard to tell how much more improvement and growth will happen within time.  I cant even dream of what our world will become.

Chapter 3: Human Trafficking

This chapter was about human trafficking and how it is still a huge issue in the world today. Human trafficking is when a person is sold, or bought, then forced into either labor, or bondage.  Its horrific to know that at that at anyone at all times are being taken advantage of and are being forced into this kind of life. There are eight forms of bondage that fall under human trafficking: industrial labor, mining forced labor, forced domestic labor, forced prostitution, forced child prostitution or forced child slavery, bonded or indentured labor, and military bondage. There are many different ways innocent people everyday get lured or tricked into this horrible industry. I feel horrified and sick with disgust to know that all these people are getting lured into this sick way of life and there’s no way to take control and stop this from happening all around the world. Knowing the sick way of life people live everyday its amazing that theses people who run these business’s can live with themselves everyday knowing that these lured people have families friends, lives and dreams that they will never get a chance too live.  When I think about the lives that have been destroyed by this type of occupation, I feel extremely grateful for the life I have and completely blessed. I believe that the only way to put an end to this is for people to truly realize the impact it has on others, and bring the issue to everyone’s attention. Maybe if it is recognized people will start to see how wrong it is and others will be more aware of their surroundings maybe even gain the courage to stop this themselves from happening around them. If we inform others of signs that will help them notice and these sorts of situations they will be able to pull themselves and others away from the dangerous situation. This reading definitely brought up other information that I was unaware of, however I did recognize most about the situation. I’ve seen movies that offer examples on human trafficking and really on how bad it is around the world. I do realize that some people haven’t been blessed with a life that was, some would say ‘easier’ than most; and much as we don’t think about it, people do need to make money and for some that means doing whatever it takes.  It honestly is disappointing but at least I know a little bit more than what I knew before and I can help educate others as well.

Candid Camera Video: #2

This video demonstrated the reaction individuals had when they were put in situations that were meant to be persuasive. In the beginning we watch three children who were hilarious; watching them fight for the ice cream was so realistic and was actually quite interesting. The way children act is mesmerizing, because most of the time it is so unexpected. Many scenarios were individuals put into sociological aspects. Two main types of scenarios were shown: Conformity, and Peer pressure. Conformity, when others try to fit in so they aren’t drawing attention to themselves and acting self-conscious. One example of conformity was when the group of people were in the art museum. The viewers kept agreeing and with what the artist (or workers) were saying, even though they truly did not see the same thing. They kept agreeing so not to offend others and to stay included and sophisticated. This scenario also represents the ‘power of scenario,’ this is where everyone is suggesting one thing and the whole group agrees, even if they don’t fully understand or see a completely different view. Peer pressure is when one acts as if they have more power and control over you. Peer pressure is shown through many different forms. One example from the video was the elevator scene, where a group would walk into the elevator and everyone would turn to face the back of the elevator and one person would remain facing the door (the correct way). Peer pressure isn’t just through words, it in fact is used mostly through actions, and here with the elevator scene the one remaining person, even though he was in the right and was standing in the ‘normal’ and supposedly correct way, once everyone turned in the opposite direction he had no choice but to follow through with them. Followed them for the lack of looking stupid and ‘wrong,’ most people don’t want to stand out and force all attention on them selves, because humans are created to feel embarrassed and self conscience, its in our nature. Another form of peer pressure is through threatening, this takes us back to the ice cream scenario. Boy girls threatened not to be the boys friend and this is one hurtful and cruel thing to say considering everyone wants to be accepted and included, this happens at all ages, especially at a young ago when everyone is trying to find them sleeve s and be accepted. The boy had no choice but to cave, because why would he want to lose one friend never mind two. Often at a young age is when bullies happen as well. Children need to be loved and accepted from a young age, other wise they use there internal pain to torture others.

Biograpghy

Hi, my name is Tianna Kiss. I am a quarter Chinese and the rest Hungarian. I am a only child and have lived in Canada my whole life. I live in Surrey with my father and step-mother. I graduated from Frank Hurt Secondary last year. I am hoping my university years will be full of adventure, and new beginnings. I am the type of person who would rather get straight to the point. I am incredibly shy, and definitely not outspoken. I tend to think a lot more in my head rather than out loud. I feel no ways about giving my honest opinion and never judge anyone else’s ideas. However I tend to judge my idea’s twenty-four seven. I am currently working and taking four courses at Kwantlen. I originally planned to study further into criminology however I’ve since then changed my mind a million times. I spent my summer in Europe, and it was incredible. Some hobbies of mine would be reading, which I adore as well as snowboarding/jet skiing. I am also one belt away from becoming a black belt in Tae Kwon Do. I have absolutely no idea where I want to go in life, although I have plenty of ideas. This summer I discovered how much I really enjoy photography and plan to maybe start taking classes. Another interest I developed in high school was film studies, which may be something I will study further throughout the years.
